Site survey & measuring
Every window, door, pergola and gate we supply starts with a proper measure. Here’s what we check, and why it saves you money.
What is a site survey?
A site survey is a visit to measure and assess the space before anything is made. For made-to-measure products like windows, doors, glass, pergolas and gates, it’s the most important step in the whole job. A few millimetres of error, or a wall that isn’t where the drawing says, can mean a product that doesn’t fit. On a survey we measure the real openings, check the structure and conditions, and agree the details with you on the spot.
Site survey & measuring at a glance
- Measuring: Laser and tape measurements of every opening or area
- Checks: Levels, square, wall construction and fixing points
- Templates: Card or digital templates for shaped glass and splashbacks
- Planning flags: Heights, boundaries, front-of-house and protected structures
- Services: Power routes, drainage and access for delivery
- Output: A written, itemised quote and specification
What we check, product by product
Windows and doors. Opening sizes, reveal depths, sills and cavity closers, escape window requirements, threshold heights and drainage.
Glass and interiors. The actual angles of walls and floors, tile and worktop positions, socket and hinge locations, and templates for shaped pieces.
Pergolas, verandas and garden rooms. Ground conditions, wall construction, fall and drainage, the footprint, sun direction, power routes, and garden-structure planning limits.
Gates, fencing and shutters. Openings and run-back space, slopes, existing pillars and walls, power and cabling, and safety zones for automated gates.
When to book the survey
Book it at the right moment in your project. Measure shower glass after tiling, splashbacks after the worktops are fitted, and bifold or sliding doors once the structural opening is formed. For new builds and extensions, we can work from drawings for an early price, then measure on site before manufacturing.
What to have ready
- A rough idea of what you want, with photos of things you like
- Access to every room or area we’re measuring
- Any drawings, planning documents or engineer’s details
- Your questions. The survey is the best time to ask them
What happens afterwards
You get a written, itemised quote listing the product, glass, colours, hardware and fitting, so you can compare like with like. Once you’re happy, we confirm the order and the manufacturing and fitting dates.

Site survey FAQs
Why do you need to measure on site when I can give you sizes?
Your sizes are a great starting point for a price. For manufacturing, though, we need our own measurements, because we’re responsible for the fit. We also check things that sizes alone don’t show: whether walls are square, what the fixings will go into, and how water will drain.
When should glass for showers and splashbacks be measured?
After tiling for showers, and after the worktops are fitted for splashbacks. Measuring earlier is the most common cause of glass that doesn’t fit.
Can you measure from architect’s drawings?
We can price from drawings, and we often do for new builds. Before anything is made, we confirm the real dimensions on site, because built openings rarely match drawings exactly.
How long does a site survey take?
Anything from 20 minutes for a single door to a couple of hours for a whole house of windows or a large garden project.
