Glass replacement
Broken panes, misted double glazing and glass that’s not safe enough. We replace the glass and keep your frames.
When the glass fails but the frame doesn’t
Windows and doors often outlive their glass. A sealed unit mists up between the panes, a stone cracks a pane, or you find out the glass in an old door isn’t safety glass. If the frames are sound, there’s usually no need to replace the whole window. We measure the glass, make a new pane or sealed unit to size, and fit it into your existing frame.
Glass replacement at a glance
- Sealed units: Double and triple glazed units made to size
- Single panes: Float, toughened, laminated and obscure glass
- Upgrades: Low-e, acoustic laminated, safety and solar control glass
- Frames: Fitted into existing timber, uPVC or aluminium frames
- Measuring: We measure the glass on site
- Processing: Cut, edged and toughened in-house
Why double glazing mists up
A double-glazed unit is two panes sealed around the edge with dry air or gas trapped between them. Over the years, that edge seal can fail. Moist air gets in and condenses between the panes, and you can’t wipe it away. The unit has lost much of its insulating value, and it won’t clear up on its own. The fix is a new sealed unit, not a new window.
Upgrading while you’re at it
Replacing a sealed unit is a cheap chance to upgrade the glass:
- Low-e glass with an argon fill, if your old units pre-date modern coatings
- Acoustic laminated glass for bedrooms on busy roads
- Toughened or laminated safety glass in doors and low panes that should have had it
- Solar control glass on rooms that overheat
How we replace glass
- Survey and measure. We measure the glass, not the frame, and check the unit thickness the frame can accept.
- Make. We cut, process and toughen the new glass, or have the sealed unit made to size.
- Fit. We remove the old glass safely, fit the new pane or unit with the right packers and seals, and re-fix the beads.
- Clean up. Old glass is taken away and the window is cleaned.
Glass replacement or new windows?
If the frames are in good condition and you’re only dealing with one or two units, glass replacement is the sensible choice. If the frames are draughty, rotten, damaged or failing all over the house, new windows will make a bigger difference, and the SEAI grant may help with the cost.

Glass replacement FAQs
Can you replace just the glass in a double glazed window?
Yes. In most uPVC, aluminium and timber frames, the sealed unit can be replaced on its own. We measure the glass and the frame’s unit depth, make a new unit to size and fit it into the existing frame.
Why is there condensation between my window panes?
The edge seal of the double-glazed unit has failed, letting moist air in between the panes. It can’t be cleaned or dried out. The unit needs replacing, but usually the frame doesn’t.
Can I put triple glazing into my existing window frames?
Only if the frame can take a thicker unit. Most older frames are designed for double glazing. We check the frame’s rebate depth at survey and tell you what’s possible.
How long does it take to replace a sealed unit?
Once the new unit is made, fitting usually takes well under an hour per window. Making the unit to size takes a little time, so we measure first and come back to fit.
Do you replace glass in doors and conservatories too?
Yes. We replace glass in doors, side panels, conservatories and roofs, and fit safety glass wherever the location requires it.
