Aluminium fencing
Slatted aluminium fencing, glass garden screens and privacy screens that never need painting and don’t rot, warp or blow down.
Fencing that lasts
Timber fencing in Ireland has a hard life. It goes green, then grey, then the posts rot at ground level and a winter storm finishes the job. Aluminium fencing doesn’t rot, doesn’t need painting and doesn’t warp. Because the slats can be spaced to let some wind through, it’s under less strain in a gale than a solid panel. Powder coated in anthracite grey, black or a wood-effect finish, it also looks considerably sharper.
Heights and planning
Irish planning exemptions for boundaries allow walls, railings and fences up to 2 metres high at the side and back of a house. In front of the house the limit is 1.2 metres. The exemption was written around walls, railings and wooden fences and doesn’t name aluminium specifically. Metal palisade and security fencing isn’t exempt at all. For a standard back-garden fence up to 2 metres there’s rarely an issue. For anything near the limits, facing a road, or on a protected structure, a quick check with the council is worthwhile. Our planning guide explains the rules.
Fixing: posts in the ground or on a wall
Fence posts are either set in concrete in the ground or bolted down onto a wall, slab or deck with base plates. Bolting slatted fencing onto a low existing wall is a popular way to raise a boundary to a useful height. Just remember the combined height counts towards the 2 metre limit.
Matching gates
Our gates use the same slat profiles and colours, so the driveway gate, side gate and fencing all match.
Aluminium fencing FAQs
How high can a fence be without planning permission in Ireland?
Up to 2 metres at the side and back of a house, and 1.2 metres in front of it. Metal palisade and security fencing isn’t exempt. If you’re adding a fence on top of a wall, the combined height counts.
Is aluminium fencing strong enough for Irish wind?
Yes, when it’s designed and fixed properly. Slatted aluminium fencing lets some wind through the gaps, which reduces the load on the posts. Posts are sized and fixed for the height and exposure of your site.
Does aluminium fencing need maintenance?
Very little. Wash it with mild soapy water once or twice a year, and more often near the sea. It never needs painting or staining.
Is aluminium fencing more expensive than timber?
Yes, it costs more up front. But it doesn’t rot, warp or need painting, and it lasts far longer, so over its lifetime it often works out comparable or cheaper.
