Anthracite aluminium roller shutters on the windows of a modern house

Shutters

Electric roller shutters

Motorised aluminium shutters for windows and patio doors. Open them with a switch, a remote, a timer or your phone.

What are electric roller shutters?

Electric roller shutters are aluminium shutters driven by a quiet tubular motor hidden inside the roller. Press a switch or a button on a remote and the shutter rolls down its side guides to cover the window or door, or rolls back up into its box. Add timers, sensors or an app, and they can open at sunrise, close at dusk and do both while you’re on holiday.

Electric roller shutters at a glance

  • Slats: Double-walled aluminium, foam-filled for insulation and quiet
  • Box: Surface-mounted outside, or concealed in the lintel on new builds
  • Motor: Tubular motor with obstacle detection
  • Control: Wall switch, remote, timers, app and smart home
  • Override: Manual override or battery backup on escape windows
  • Finish: Powder-coated colours to match windows and doors

Why fit electric shutters?

Security you’ll actually use. A shutter is only useful if it’s down. With a timer or a single switch, closing every shutter in the house takes a second.

Sleep. Shutters block light far better than blinds. On short summer nights that’s worth a lot.

Comfort. Foam-filled slats and the trapped air behind them cut heat loss through glass at night. Lowered by day in summer, they keep south and west-facing rooms cool.

Away from home. Timers make an empty house look lived in, which is why shutters are popular on holiday homes.

How we survey, supply and fit electric roller shutters

  1. Survey. We measure each opening and check the wall above for the box and either side for the guides, then plan the cable routes.
  2. Specification. We agree the slat type, colour, box position, controls, and override for escape windows.
  3. Made to measure. Each shutter is built to the opening and set up with its motor.
  4. Installation. We fix the box and guides, hang the curtain, set the motor’s upper and lower limits, and a registered electrician connects the power.
  5. Handover. We pair the remotes, set the timers or app, and show you the manual override.

Choosing electric roller shutters

Box position. On existing houses the box sits on the outside wall above the window. It’s neat, but visible. On new builds, the box can be built into the lintel or hidden under the render, so only the guides show.

Colour. Match the box and guides to your window frames so the shutter reads as part of the window.

Light slots. Some slat profiles have small perforations that let pinpricks of light and air through when the shutter is down but not fully closed. These suit living rooms better than bedrooms.

Smart control. Group the shutters by room or side of the house, set timers, or link them to a sun sensor.

  • Bedrooms that need real darkness
  • Holiday homes and houses left empty for periods
  • West-facing rooms that overheat on summer evenings

Electric roller shutter FAQs

Are electric roller shutters noisy?

Modern tubular motors are quiet. You’ll hear a gentle hum while the shutter moves, which takes a few seconds. Foam-filled slats also cut rattle in the wind.

Do electric shutters work in a power cut?

The shutter stays where it is. On escape windows, and anywhere you need to open them without power, we fit a manual override or battery backup.

Can I control roller shutters from my phone?

Yes, with an app-compatible motor or hub. You can open and close shutters individually or in groups, set timers, and link them to sun or temperature sensors.

Can electric shutters be fitted to an existing house?

Yes. On existing homes the shutter box is fitted on the outside wall above the window, with guides down the sides. Power is run to each motor, and a registered electrician makes the connections.

Will roller shutters reduce my heating bills?

They can help. Lowered at night, foam-filled shutters reduce heat loss through glass and cut draughts. How much you save depends on your windows and how consistently you use them.
